About the Northwest Video Workshop

The Northwest Video Workshop will be an intensive two-day hands -on video and editing workshop in Yakima, Wash., Dec. 15-16, 2007.
The workshop will provide a foundation for print journalists to shoot and edit video in a timely manner.
The first day of the workshop, led by Kurt Austin and Tony Overman, will cover video ethics, shooting techniques, small group shoot-around and shooting for a short story.
The second day of the workshop, led by Colin Mulvany, will cover developing an editing process, Final Cut basics and editing video shot the previous day.
Over the two days groups will also learn how to output high resolution images from their video for use in print, learn to adapt print skills to video and gain regional contacts to continue working together after the workshop.

Basic synopsis of what trainers will cover:

Tony Overman (First day)
Still photographers can feel like a fish out of water when making the switch to audio and video. Not just from the technical challenges, but also from the ethical questions raised when learning new skills. What are the ethics of video and audio, and how do they mesh with the ethics of still photography?

Overman and Kurt Austin will guide you through the transition, and lead a discussion designed to help still photographers see how their ethical standards fit right into their new job skills.

Kurt Austin (First day)
Kurt will help participants tell stories with video: How to find the right shots, keeping your shots steady and the importance of wide, medium, and tight shots. Simple sequencing will also be discussed, and he will talk about gathering meaningful sound for your stories.

Colin Mulvany (Second day)
Shoot, capture, edit, compress: These four things define the basic workflow needed to create a simple video story. With Apple’s Final Cut video editing program, you can quickly transform your video clips into a compelling narrative. For many, Final Cut Pro may seem daunting at first. Once the basics are mastered, you will find the program intuitive and easy to use. In this workshop you will learn how to:

- Create a video editing work flow
- Set up a Final Cut project correctly
- Capture your clips from camera to computer
- Edit your clips into a short video
- Use editing tools effectively
- Navigate the timeline quickly
- Add audio and video transitions
- Create simple titles
- Export and compress your finished video
